Chase is now available for your next hockey game. Not to play, but to sing the National Anthem.

I mentioned in an earlier post about Chase's ability to recite a book back that we've read to him. Well, here you go...

skating

Chase has been on skates now for several months. He has skating pedigree - not only is he Russian, but he is also from the hometown of NHL great, Alexander Mogilny. Initially he wasn't too enthused about the Saturday morning class lessons, but with more ice time throughout the week, he now quite enjoys it. But the things he loves the most are the jelly beans I give him after and watching the zamboni.

chase turns 4

It's hard to believe that another year has come and gone. We've been having an amazing time with Chase - he's taught us a lot. He's growing in every way imaginable. He's now 40 lbs and 40"; his language skills are excellent; he has a great imagination; and he is becoming quite the little swimmer and skater. What is also amazing is his memory. You tell him that you'll do something later, he'll remind you. If you read him a book he'll tell you the story back. It's all great fun.

We were waiting for Chase to come down on his birthday morning. Usually he climbs in to our bed before 7am, but he didn't come downstairs until well after 8am. When he did arrive his face lit up with the sight of the ballons and the gifts on the table. He just stood there and soaked it all in.

This year we simply had a small family affair. On his actual birthday my parents joined us for the celebration along with visits from Diana and Albertine. Later in the week Kevin and Eileen flew in and spent a wonderful week with us and helped to celebrate not only Chase's birthday, but my Dad's 70th as well. Ice cream cake all around!

It was a very special celebration.

halloween

In the bible there is a quote from Jesus - "It is more blessed to give than to receive." - something that our little man has taken to heart. I'm not suggesting that Chase doesn't enjoy receiving candy, but he has as much fun if not more giving it out at our front door.

Our Halloween day begins with the carving of the pumpkin and roasting of the seeds. Leanne will draw the face, and then she and Chase will cut the face while my mother deals with the seeds. Chase quite enjoys this little tradition; and no, the beer isn't his, he just loves to pose.

This year both Chase and Victor were firefighters - out to protect us from ourselves. Leanne bought the costume on a trip to Costco after Chase spotted it and placed it in the cart with the request, "Buy this, mommy". We took the same route as last year with the first visit to Leanne and Gary across the street. Their girls were waiting for Chase to arrive and fill his bag. From there he insisted we go to Saul's, who is our next store neighbour. We continued on our little route with a stop at the Leblanc's and back home while he literally dragged his bag down the street.

Once home Chase relieved my mom who was handing out the treats while we were out. Like I said earlier, Chase absolutely loves this, and did so until after 8pm. Now most kids I know would be very interested in keeping tabs on their candy; but not Chase. He'll be mad at me in the future when he reads this, but I've eaten more than he has.

Yet another benefit to having children.

a trip to the zoo

We wanted to take advantage of the good Fall weather and take a trip to the zoo. I was being partly selfish when I made the suggestion (I wanted to take photos), but I wanted Chase to see the "Big 5" animals at the Toronto Zoo.

The weather that day was perfect, so we headed off to see the animals. Elephants, hippos and giraffe - all were out to be seen. We even saw some lions, rhinos and penguins. But if you were to ask Chase which animal was the highlight of the day, he would say the caterpillar. Go figure.

first day of school

Posted on Monday, November 07, 2011 by Paul M McLeod

It's that wonderful time of the year - back to school. Now Chase has had two previous "first day of school" events, but now he's starting to hit the big leagues - Junior Kindergarten, better known as JK. He attends a school right in our development which is very convenient and obviously doesn't require him to take a school bus. This is great, and is the way that Leanne and I also grew up going to school.

Initially he was fine when he would go. He'd be dropped off and in he would run. But then he went through a spell of not wanting to go in. Thankfully that's passed, and he's happy to give a kiss and a hug before running to play with his friends.

He's doing very well. He's developing a love of "reading" (of course he can't read yet, but loves to be read to and loves to sit and flip through books), continues to be very tech savvy, and loves to show off his imagination.
